The conference hosted by the PAGB is an
annual forum to bring together health professionals,
voluntary sector representatives, the Department
of Health and the OTC industry to showcase
self-care initiatives.
Currently,
the Department of Health and NHS are
keen to evaluate and commission new
research into ways in which demand on
the NHS could be managed. The 'Working
in Partnership Advisory Group' set
up in the DoH has funded not only PAGB's
PCT project 'Joining up Self-Care in
a PCT - An exemplar study' but also
a schools curriculum study called 'Making
Sense of Health' and an occupational
health study to look at reducing the
need for sick certificates. All these
projects were described at the conference. |

PAGB OTC Business
Seminar: 17 June 2004
Self-medication: A decade from now
The PAGB's OTC Future Business Seminar,
hosted for PAGB members on Thursday 17 June
2004, brought together speakers from industry,
retail and the healthcare professions to
explore and discuss the key changes, developments
and issues that will shape the UK market
for self-care and self-medication over the
next 10 years.
The speakers included Bron Gorny, PAGB
President and MD, The Mentholatum Company
Ltd; Dr Rebecca Rosen, Fellow in Health
Policy, The King's Fund; Claire Conroy,
Cross-category specialist, IMS Health; Dr
James Kennedy, GP; Andy Rush, Vice President,
Pfizer Consumer Healthcare; and Steve Hill,
Healthcare Commercial Director, Boots The
Chemists.
During the seminar, the speakers agreed
that self-care is evolving and acknowledged
the changing climate, which is seeing the
development of self-care from the management
of short-term ailments towards prevention
of illness and the management of chronic
illness. The UK was heralded as a leader
in this evolution with its positive political
and regulatory environment.
However, it was recognised that, to ensure
the growth and success of self-care in the
next 10 years, the relationship between
patients, healthcare professionals and industry
would have to change and evolve too.
A few key predictions for the future included:
- The UK will be a blue-print for Europe
in shaping the market for self-care
- Consumers will become increasingly informed
about their health. They will become managers
of their own health
- Industry, retail and the healthcare
professions will have to acknowledge and
engage with the individual needs of consumers
- Doctors will stop being the first point-of-contact
for patients. They will become 'guides'
to the range of healthcare services available
- Clinical practice will move away from
the doctor-led hierarchy to inter-sectoral
or team working
- Increased competition to provide healthcare
services
- More outlets for OTC medicines in the
form of virtual and automated dispensers.
The grocery channel will be more significant
for OTCs.
- The boundaries between medicines and
food will become even more blurred
PAGB
Sixth Annual Self-Care Conference
Making Self-Care a Reality in Primary
Care
Health Minister Rosie Winterton championed
PAGB's Annual Self-Care Conference this
year. The conference focussed on "Making
Self-Care a Reality in Primary Care".
She took the opportunity to announce the
appointment of a new 'Director for Self-Care'.
Sarah Mullally currently the DoH Chief Nursing
Officer will take up the new role to ensure
that self-care will gain the focussed attention
that PAGB and many other organizations have
been calling for as part of a holistic approach
to healthcare across the NHS policies and
plans.

Over 100 delegates from across the industry
and leaders in the National Health Service
came together to discuss the importance
of 'Self-Care' in the future of health strategy
at this conference.
More importantly, they discussed how this
can be made a practical reality integrating
it into everyday health care behaviour.
PAGB also launched the Self-Care Review
2003 called 'Advancing
Self-Care'. This review pulls together
some of the exciting initiatives and learnings
in self-care which will hopefully provide
a basis for futher discussion and build
commitment to 'Advancing Self-Care.'
