Our vision
PAGB’s vision for self-care and what we would like to see happen to help people to get well, feel well and stay well:
To put self-care back into practice we need to:
- Equip people with the knowledge to self-care and self treat commonly occurring conditions as this will lead to an empowered population with greater confidence to look after themselves knowing when it’s safe to
self-care and when professional help is needed.
- Include self-care in health strategy and policy at all levels to support
self-care in practice.
- Implement practical solutions at local, regional and national level that promote self-care.
To support self-care through better regulation we need to:
- Ensure wider access to medicines that allow people to practise self-care, when it is safe to do so, through the continuation of a steady stream of switches.
- Reduce unnecessary regulatory burden for over-the-counter medicines.
- Enable a regulatory system that builds trust in over-the-counter medicines through a proportionate and evidence-based response to risk so that the variety of ingredients available for responsible self care is not diminished.
To ensure the UK population achieves the nutritional intake required to maintain good health we need to:
- Provide advice about supplements to sit logically alongside advice on healthy eating, and provide additional options for consumers, particularly those unable to make dietary changes immediately.
- Ensure a more joined up approach across all Government communication channels relating to diet which would benefit the public. Official advice about supplements is inconsistent.
- Implement existing Government policy on supplements for vulnerable groups consistently.
