Last month, the Government published the Independent Water Commission report which was chaired by Sir John Cunliffe and was set up to review the water sector regulatory system in England and Wales.
The final report sets out the areas where the commission believes major and ambitious change is needed, based on its evidence and engagement. In relation to the over-the-counter medicine sector, the report makes a recommendation that ‘The UK and Welsh governments should update and reform the UWWTR 1994 to deliver better outcomes and a more sustainable approach to drainage and wastewater management. This should involve reporting on whether an Extended Producer Responsibility scheme is needed for the water sector to fund necessary improvements.’
Given the potential impact this could have on medicine manufacturers, we will be sure to monitor this issue as it progresses.
The report also focuses on key themes such as: strategic direction and planning, legislative framework, regulator reform, regulation reform, infrastructure and implementation.
This report has now been submitted to the UK and Welsh governments. Both governments will respond and consult on proposals, including potential legislation.
