This paper outlines the criteria for substances being listed as persistent organic pollutants under the Stockholm Convention, the UK’s obligations under the convention, and the progress made by the UK.
The Stockholm Convention is a global treaty aimed at eliminating or restricting Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). The UK, as a party to the Convention, has made significant progress in aligning its regulations with international commitments. Recent updates include amendments to the POPs Regulation to reflect decisions made at the 2025 Conference of the Parties (COP), such as the listing of UV-328, Dechlorane Plus, and Methoxychlor in Annex A. Although the UK initially submitted a non-acceptance notification for these substances, it plans to withdraw this when appropriate, reinforcing its commitment to eliminating harmful POPs from production, use, and waste.
